Designed to improve communication access for Medicaid and NC Health Choice beneficiaries who are Deaf, Deaf-Blind and Hard of Hearing

On Jan. 26, 2021, the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services launched the Medicaid Communication Access service through a partnership between NC Medicaid and the NC Division of Services for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing (DSDHH).

The service is designed to improve equal communication access for Medicaid and NC Health Choice beneficiaries who are Deaf, Deaf-Blind and Hard of Hearing in health care settings with NC Medicaid providers. It enables DSDHH to reimburse Medicaid contracted providers for a variety of services, such as sign language interpreters, Communication Access Real-time Translation (CART) services, and more

DSDHH administers the Medicaid Communication Access service. To learn more about the service and milestones achieved in the first year, please read the one-year anniversary article. Learn more about this new service and the benefits available on the Medicaid Communication Access webpage.

Healthcare providers and beneficiaries may also contact DSDHH for assistance with services provided.
