Non-Emergency Medicaid Transportation Updates - April 29

WellCare broker update, contracting with transportation brokers, emergent care reminder

Under Medicaid Managed Care, Prepaid Health Plans (PHPs) provide non-emergency medical transportation (NEMT) and non-emergency ambulance transportation (NEAT) services for PHP members. For NC Medicaid Direct and Eastern Band of Cherokee Indian (EBCI) Tribal Option members, local Department of Social Services (DSS) offices continue to coordinate NEMT and NEAT services.

PHPs have contracted with transportation brokers that work with public and private transportation providers to arrange and provide transportation for these members.

Beginning May 1, 2022, WellCare’s NEMT broker is changing from One Call to MTM. However, the phone number that WellCare members use to make NEMT appointments will remain the same following the transition: 877-598-7602. Providers assisting members in scheduling NEMT would also continue to use this number.

As of April 18, 2022, MTM began scheduling NEMT appointments for May 1, 2022 and after. WellCare has begun sending materials to members informing them of this change. For transportation providers who may have questions, please contact MTM at 888-597-1180.

ModivCare will continue to serve as the transportation broker for AmeriHealth Caritas of North Carolina, Carolina Complete Health, Healthy Blue and UnitedHealthcare of North Carolina.

If you are assisting a member with arranging transportation, the member can contact the PHP Member Services line on their Medicaid ID Card.

Contracting with Transportation Brokers

NEMT and NEAT contracting is an ongoing process. All NEMT and NEAT providers are strongly encouraged to contract with both transportation brokers to ensure PHP members have adequate access to care. Contact information for each broker is listed below.

Emergent Care Reminder

For emergent ambulance transport, ambulance providers do not need to schedule transportation through the transportation broker and will submit claims for payment directly to the member’s PHP.
