2023 Medicaid Provider Experience Survey Report Released

Describes findings from the third assessment of provider experience and satisfaction with the NC Medicaid program.

The North Carolina Provider Experience Survey evaluates the influence of NC Medicaid Transformation on primary care and obstetrics/gynecology (Ob/Gyn) practices that contract with Medicaid. It is administered across all North Carolina independent primary care practices, medical groups and health care systems that provide primary care or Ob/Gyn care.

Findings from the third survey assessment of provider experience and satisfaction with the NC Medicaid program, conducted from March to July 2023, are included in this report. It describes organizational experiences, contracting, and satisfaction with the five Prepaid Health Plans (PHPs) in the third year of Medicaid Managed Care.

Providers are asked about contracting with PHPs, overall perceived effects of PHPs on care delivery and experience with clinical and administrative factors. The survey also asks providers about their approach to integrating behavioral health care into their practice’s normal scope and their plans regarding contracting with Behavioral Health and Intellectual/ Developmental Disabilities Tailored Plans, which launched July 1, 2024.

Stratified analyses draw comparisons between rural and non-rural provider groups; small, medium and large provider groups; and groups delivering obstetrics and gynecology versus those who only provide primary care.

The survey and its findings are administered and analyzed by the Sheps Center for Health Services Research at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. The report and corresponding two-page summary are available on the NC Medicaid Quality Management and Improvement webpage.
