1915(i) Services for Intellectual or Developmental Disabilities
NC Medicaid’s 1915(i) services are for certain people with NC Medicaid, including people with intellectual or developmental disabilities. These conditions can cause someone to need help with activities in their home and communities. Examples include autism, Down syndrome or fetal alcohol spectrum disorder.
You could get 1915(i) services while waiting for the NC Innovations waiver.
In some cases, friends and family members can be paid by NC Medicaid to provide the services. For more information, call the Member and Recipient Service Line on your health plan ID card.
Skills for the home or community
Community Living and Supports helps you learn life skills and complete daily activities. A trained worker will supervise or assist you with activities in the home or community. This can include teaching skills, such as:
- Personal care (like bathing and eating)
- Home skills (like cooking and laundry)
- Community skills (like shopping and banking)
- Extra support for health and safety
- The types of skills you learn depend on your goals.

Job coaching
Supported Employment helps you find, get and a keep a job that’s right for you. A specialist will help you with:
- Career planning and discovery
- Résumé assistance
- Job interview practice
- Help with learning assigned job tasks
- Help with learning how to get to work
This Medicaid service is for people ages 16 or older. You must have gone through services by Employment and Independence for People with Disabilities (EIPD) before you can get Supported Employment. For details, see the clinical coverage policy for 1915(i) Supported Employment for I/DD and TBI.
Breaks for you and your caregivers
Respite gives caregivers a break, while knowing their loved one is cared for. This service is:
- Provided in or out of the home
- For a few hours, overnight or weekends
- Available for emergency care
- Up to 300 hours each year
This Medicaid service is for people ages 3 or older. People enrolled in Community Alternatives Program for Children (CAP/C) or Community Alternatives Program for Disabled Adults (CAP/DA) are not eligible for the respite service. For details, see the clinical coverage policy for 1915(i) Respite.
Supports for moving to your own home
Community Transition gives you funds (up to $5,000 in credit) to help you move from an approved setting to your own private home.
Approved settings include a state-operated health care facility, foster or group home, psychiatric residential treatment facility, community intermediate care facility (ICF-IID) and more.
Funds can be used to pay for:
- Security deposit for an apartment or house
- Essential home furnishings, like furniture, kitchen utensils and linens
- Moving expenses
- Set-up fees for utilities (like phone, electricity, gas)
This Medicaid service is for people of all ages. People enrolled in Community Alternatives Program for Children (CAP/C) or Community Alternatives Program for Disabled Adults (CAP/DA) are not eligible for the Community Transition service.
