SPECIAL BULLETIN COVID-19 #167: NC Medicaid No Longer Accepting COVID-19 Response Facility Designation Requests

Due to diminished need, NC Medicaid will no longer accept new requests to serve as a Response Facility from nursing homes, effective Monday, June 21, 2021.

As established in SPECIAL BULLETIN COVID-19 #82: Expedited Hardship Advances and Retroactive Targeted Rate Increases for Skilled Nursing Facilities and Adult Care Homes Serving COVID-positive Patients  and revised in SPECIAL BULLETIN COVID-19 #144: COVID-Nursing Facility Response Site Criteria Revised, NC Medicaid established the nursing home “COVID Response Facility” option to support nursing homes that accepted COVID+ beneficiaries discharging from an acute care facility. 

Due to diminished need, NC Medicaid will no longer accept new requests to serve as a Response Facility from nursing homes, effective Monday, June 21, 2021. 

Current Response Facility sites will retain the Response Facility status and related payments until any of the of the following occur:  

  • the public health emergency ends 
  • NC Medicaid otherwise elects to end COVID-related payments 
  • the facility experiences a COVID outbreak 
  • the facility elects to end its Response Facility status 

This bulletin does not change or otherwise modify facility requirements related to admission and discharge supports.
