Registered Dieticians and Nutritionists Added to the List of Eligible Providers

<p>Effective July 26, 2020, Registered Dieticians and Nutritionists may enroll in Medicaid or the NC Health Choice program to provide and bill for this service for pregnant women and beneficiaries less than 21 years of age. &nbsp;</p>

As outlined in Clinical Coverage policy 1-I, the Dietary Evaluation and Counseling services of Registered Dieticians and Nutritionists have been billed by their employing provider. Effective July 26, 2020, Registered Dieticians and Nutritionists may enroll in Medicaid or the NC Health Choice program to provide and bill for this service for pregnant women and beneficiaries less than 21 years of age.  

System changes have been completed to allow Registered Dieticians and Nutritionists to receive reimbursement for the following Current Procedural Terminology® (CPT) codes when the services are provided in accordance with the policy.

97802 – Medical nutrition therapy; initial assessment and intervention, individual, face-to-face with the patient, each 15 minutes
97803 – Re-assessment and intervention, individual, face-to-face with the patient, each 15 minutes

Provider Qualifications and Occupational Licensing Entity Regulations:

  1. Dietitian or Nutritionist, currently licensed by the N.C. Board of Dietetics-Nutrition (provisional license is not acceptable); 
  2. Registered Dietitian, currently registered with the Commission of Dietetic Registration (registration eligibility is not acceptable).

Registered Dieticians and Nutritionists may enroll in the Medicaid or NC Health Choice program to provide this service and bill Medicaid or NC Health Choice.
