2023 CAHPS Survey Report Released

This survey provides a national standard for assessing beneficiaries’ health care experience.

NC Medicaid, in partnership with Health Services Advisory Group, administered the 2023 Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (CAHPS®) survey to assess adult and child beneficiaries’ health care experiences. Beneficiary respondents provided actionable health care performance feedback that will aid in improving overall care for NC Medicaid beneficiaries.

In 2023, the CAHPS survey was administered to beneficiaries of the five Standard Plans, the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians (EBCI) Tribal Option, NC Medicaid Direct child beneficiaries who were currently in Foster Care, those in NC Medicaid Direct who were eligible for Tailored Plans upon their launch, and all other NC Medicaid Direct beneficiaries. The survey was administered between July 28, 2023, and Oct. 20, 2023.

The findings from the survey are detailed in the report. Beneficiaries were asked about how they would rate their health plan, health care and providers; their experience with different dimensions of care provision; if they had received a flu vaccination; and if their providers had approached smoking cessation topics with them.

Additional priority area topics were added by NC Medicaid, including questions about mental health care, interpreter services, online health care information access and experiences with health equity in care settings.

Stratified analyses draw comparisons to better understand differences in experience and where disparities may have been present. Some of the analyses conducted included comparisons based on respondents’ race and ethnicity, and whether the respondent resided in rural or urban counties.

The report and corresponding two-page summary are available on the NC Medicaid Quality Management and Improvement webpage.
